The Lady Mohawks picked up their first win of the season Thursday in a conference matchup with Portsmouth West. The 7-1 victory gives the Mohawks some momentum heading into week three of the season and a school record for number of goals scored in a game.
“We have played well throughout the first four games of the season consistently getting into that final third of the pitch but just haven’t been able to punch it through the net consistently. Tonight that changed” said Head Coach Tim Amburgey. The Mohawks utilized a solid passing game while maintaining possession of the ball that resulted in the win. Amburgey continued “This was the most complete game by our squad during my tenure here. While the focus tonight was on the offense I do not want to detract from the defensive effort put forth by our fullbacks. Destiny Ruth did an outstanding job defensively and was able to make several nice runs to help out on the offensive end while Kaley Hamilton played a tough center spot”.
Amburgey continued “one of the nice things about tonight’s match was the distribution of the scoring. Five different players were able to score tonight”. The match remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of the game as the Mohawks patiently placed shots on goal. Eva Reyes would score her first of two goals on the evening at the 17:52 mark of the first half from an assist by Katie Argueta. Goals would follow from Sydnie Jenkins and Alexia Throckmorton to close out the the half with the Mohawks leading 3-0.
In the second half Northwest continued a strong offensive showing with goals by Eva Reyes and Alexia Throckmorton. Destiny Ruth scored from a corner kick with a nicely placed ball and the final goal for the Mohawks came with 12:46 remaining off the foot of Ellie Curtis. The Senators would close out the scoring on the night on a direct kick over Mohawk defenders by Ashlynn Pfau.
“We have to give a lot of credit tonight to the Senator keeper Dreama Sadler. She made some very nice saves tonight as we placed quite a few shots on goal. Overall the Senators are a young team both in age and experience and I know that Coaches Hoggard and Merrifield will continue to see improvement throughout the season’ said Coach Amburgey. “In regards to our team I hope we continue to build on the progress we have made and have turned the corner. These young ladies have worked hard the last two seasons and we are starting to see the fruits of our labor”.
The Mohawks continue league play next Tuesday as they travel to Waverly High School for a 5p.m. match.
