Middle School Honor Band
to Perform at Scioto County’s Music Festival
Northwest Middle School Honor Band students will
attend the Scioto County Music Festival Concert this Tuesday, March
9th, at Shawnee State University. The concert will be held in the
Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. An admission fee of $5.00 will be
charged to those attending.
The Junior High Honor Band performance begins at 6:30 pm, with the
High School Honor Band and Choir beginning at 7:30 pm.

Jason Montavon
wins Poetry Contest
Northwest
Middle School student, Jason Montavon, recently participated in a
poetry competition held by The Kroger’s Company. The purpose
of the event was for students to help celebrate “Black History
Month.” Jason’s poem, “Black Is the Color of Me”,
was selected as the winning poem from several entries. As part of
his prize, Jason will attend a banquet, at which time he will be presented
with a laptop computer. Jason is the son of Paul and Marsha Montavon
of Otway, Ohio. He is an 8th grade student of Mrs. Connie Altman’s
Language Class. Read

Representative Todd Book
Speaks to Scioto Librarians
Todd
Book, the 89th District Representative for the Ohio House of Representatives
spoke at the Ohio Valley School Librarians Association (OVSLA) Meeting
which was held in the Northwest High School Media center on January
25th. Representative Book spoke with the librarians about the recently
passed House Bill 1, which includes having certified librarians in
Ohio schools, as well as updated State Teachers Retirement System

Fruit Sale Winners
Northwest
Middle School recently completed their annual Fruit Sale Campaign.
The students in grades six through eight sold a variety of fruits
throughout the community over a three week period. The top three sellers
in the Middle School were Hannah Mueller, (6th grade student) Sean
Rhoden, (6th grade student) and Micah Campbell (8th grade student.
NMS Principal, Mr. Greg Tipton, presented the winners with their prize
money.

Veterans Day 2009
Northwest Middle and High
School staff and students participated in their annual Veteran’s
Day Ceremony. The William A. Baker American Legion Post 363 opened
the ceremony with the “Presentation of the Colors.” Northwest
High School Band and chorus performed musical selections, with the
pledge of allegiance being led by senior class President, Miss Chelsi
Wilson.

Grade Trip to Chicago Northwest
Middle School is implementing a special program for 8th grade students.
If students have maintained an “honor roll status” over
their past three years at Northwest Middle School, they will be eligible
to take an 8th grade “class trip” to a selected location:
Chicago, New York, or Washington, D.C. This year’s 8th
grade class has chosen the nation’s “windy city”,
