Class Takes Action

Mrs. Dalton’s fifth-grade class
decided to write letters to Ohio representatives to let them know
how they felt about the state tests. They think that the testing
in the areas of math, social studies and science are unfair because
students have to read the text. Some students may not be strong
readers, but have a grasp on the content on these areas. Students
came up the with alternatives to the testing problem, such as computerized
testing and a tape recording of the test being read. Students mailed
these business letters to the state school superintendent, the Ohio
State School board members, senators, and members of the Ohio House
of Representatives. Paige Simon, Reuben Miller and Rodney Phillips
were the first students to receive a reply from an Ohio State Board
of Education member and a State senator.
